When I read about the history of the Cleveland Indians, my favorite player is Lou Boudreau. He made his major league debut in 1938 at the age of 21, although he wasn't a full-time starter until 1940. At the end of the 1941 season, when he was 24, he was appointed the player manager of the Indians. He played and managed at the same time. No one does that anymore, but I guess it happened sometimes back then.

Lou was a great hitter and fielder, winning the batting title in 1944 and making several all-star appearances. But the major highlight came in 1948 when the Indians won the World Series. (They haven't won it since then.) Lou was still the player manager and he was named the American League MVP that year.

After that, he didn't have much success as a player. He had a couple more managing jobs for other teams, but those weren't very successful either. Eventually, he became a color commentator on the radio for the Chicago Cubs, from 1958-1987.

Lou was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970 and the Cleveland Indians retired his number 5 that same year. He died in 2001.

I noticed your user info from the fantasy baseball community. I see you're an Indians fan...me too! I grew up in West Virginia and am a huge Reds & Indians fan (and O's). Nice to meet you.

Me too, obviously. I'm impressed that you got it, some people don't.

So what's wrong with the Tribe this year?

I wish I knew. There are a few guys on the DL right now, but that's hardly a good excuse. They couldn't even win consistently when everyone was healthy. The season as a whole is pretty much done for, so all I can do now is sit back, enjoy a win every few days, and wait until next year.

The Indians won on Friday night. Or are you talking about a different series?

I was at the game on Saturday, and it was pretty sad. For Indians fans, anyway. I still had a lot of fun though, because I was meeting up with a bunch of friends.

oh that's right...well I thought they swept them in Cincinnati. That's right, the Indians did win on Friday, they were the first team to rough up Volquez.

Oh, yeah, the Reds did sweep the Indians in Cincinnati. The Indians are really good at getting lots of hits off good pitchers and making bad pitchers look like Cy Young. :)

exhibit A: Barry Zito. I was up at Cedar Point for that game, couldn't believe it. I had my Indians hat on and everything. My dad got to go to an Indians game with his job a few weeks ago and he said they looked terrible. I should be going to a couple of Reds games at the end of the month against the Rockies so I'm hoping they can win. Ever since I moved to Charlotte I've been pretty far away from an MLB team, Atlanta being the closest. Boo.

That must be tough, being so far from any baseball team. I'm fortunate to live close enough to Cleveland that I can go to games every once in a while.
